So, uh, hi! I'm 22 years old, college educated, I make movies, I love comics, I hail from Austin, TX, and I started this blog a year ago.
The way it works here is, every week or so I read the next Batman comic story, in chronological publication order, and then digest, discuss, and mock it here for your amusement and edification. I will do this for a very long time, eventually rolling in movies, television, and video games, in an effort to understand and enjoy the totality of the massive pop culture phenomena that is Batman.
If you're wondering where to start, I naturally recommend the beginning, but here's a short list of some of my favorites:
I do this for me, because talking about these is fun and a necessary part of the process, but I also do this for you, so I dearly hope that you get some enjoyment out of these posts. (You can always show your appreciation through words; or, there's a donation button to your right. No pressure.)
Thanks again for checking this blog out, and I hope you stick around!

Hello,
ReplyDeleteSo I am a huge Golden Age Batman fan. I have read all of the blog entries up to this one and I understand that part of the purpose of this blog is to poke fun at the characters but I still have a few questions.
1. Do you really like Batman, or do you just enjoy making fun of it, or both?
2. Do you really believe that there was meant to be homosexual innuendo or are we, as a generation 70 years removed, reading the innuendo into this?
3. What got you started on the idea of digesting, discussing, an mocking 70+ years of Batman?
Thank you for you time,
A fellow Bat-fan
Hi! Thanks for reading.
ReplyDelete1. I do really love Batman, and have ever since I was a kid watching the Tim Sale animated series. I think you'd have to be crazy to go through 70 years (or even the nearly three years of Golden Age comics I've done so far) of a character without liking that character.
But I also enjoy making fun of it! Batman is a really absurd concept, and the Golden Age is really very silly. I began with more serious intentions in mind, but pretty quickly settled on a decent mix of analysis, context, and gay jokes. Speaking of which:
2. I believe the vast majority (probably all, but blanket statements are evil) of the homosexual innuendo in these comics were originally intended to be expressions of normal male affection and camaraderie. I certainly don't believe that the DC writers intended to put homosexual (and pedophiliac) themes into what I'm sure even they considered to be purely children's entertainment. But today's readers are, I think, uncomfortable with emotion, particularly between men, or adults and children, and so out of that discomfort comes a lot of humor.
3. I'm a completionist by nature--I like to set lists of things for myself to do. Right now I'm reading all the James Bond books, watching every Disney animated film, watching the IMDB Top 250 (up to about 200, but of course the list keeps changing).
Sometimes this can make a chore out of my entertainment, but usually it gets me to read and watch things I wouldn't normally, which I end up enjoying. Batman, however, was especially tedious, thanks to the low quality of aged comics (visually and creatively, I suppose). Normally it helps to discuss what I'm experiencing with friends, or at least read other peoples' discussions online. But nobody I knew or could find was doing this.
So instead I discuss my experiences here on the blog. I'm progressing a lot slower, because writing the entries takes a lot of time (and I suck at keeping to a regular schedule), but I'm having a lot more fun with it, and really learning a lot more this way, because I'm forced to study what I'm reading in order to find interesting things to say.
We'll see how I feel in 20 years, but for now I'd say this is a huge success, at least for me. And I'm glad that people around the world can enjoy reading the blog and connecting with Batman in a whole new way.
